A hook shaped peninsula in Massachusetts, famous for the Kennedy compound which was a summer retreat for the political family for years was our latest destination for RMWorldTravel’s big “Let’s Go America! Tour” - Cape Cod. This coastal area of Massachusetts is a top summer destination for travelers and has about 225,000 year round residents according to the latest Census.
We’ve enjoyed previous stays on the Cape in the past but this May we chose the Wequasset Resort and Golf Club as our home, and the property we broadcasted America’s #1 Travel Radio Show from live on Saturday, May 14, 2022 across the USA. Overlooking serene, picturesque Pleasant Bay, The Wequasset is the only Forbes 5-Star hotel on the Cape along with the first Forbes 5-Star restaurant, twenty-eight Atlantic. The resort’s ideal location in Harwich, bordering historic Chatham on the Lower Cape and a short drive from Hyannis — offers visitors plenty of sightseeing options and an array of outdoor activities. There’s boating, seaside trails, beach walks with stunning sunset views, fishing, shopping, bicycling, art galleries, a lavender farm and more if you want it — or less if you just want to completely unwind by the idyllic water and get lost in a good book.
The Cape Cod National Seashore is a historic national park spanning nearly 40 miles of shoreline and 43,000+ acres. Although well known for its stunning coastline and beaches, the Cape boasts a rich maritime and cultural history as well. It was the sandy shores of Provincetown in the Outer Cape, where the Pilgrims first landed in 1620. Today the site is marked with an unmistakable and grand granite monument.
Additionally, Provincetown is a not-to-be-missed seaside town filled with artists, galleries, quaint shops, cafes and some seriously good seafood. Although it may look touristy — the landmark Lobster Pot serves up some of the best seafood in the area and is loved by locals too. When in Provincetown, we encourage you to enjoy Arts Dune Tours as we have. You’ll ride and roll over the dunes in special vehicles led by Art’s son Rob, who now runs the family business or one of his team drivers, and learn the fascinating history of the artist’s beach shacks, the eco-system and the wildlife of the Dunes. Not to mention some fun facts that only the locals seem to know about the Cape. There’s a reason they’ve been operating since 1946 — what a great time!
For sites and activities, there’s the John F. Kennedy Museum in Hyannis, the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis highlighting hundreds of local artists, the Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory, glass making at various glass studios and the Glass Museum in Sandwich. You can also go whale watching, multiple lighthouses await you — there’s the Maritime Museum and so much more. If you’re a sports fan, and baseball in particular — you’ll definitely want to make time to experience a summer game with the Cape Cod Baseball League. Many MLB stars played in the Cape League and games are free with a hat passed around for a suggested donation. We highly recommend this family-friendly activity.
Another attractive feature of the Cape is the ferry access or a small plane to the neighbouring islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard — each with its own special maritime history and gorgeous sandy coastlines. They make perfect day trips or leisure vacation extensions for a few days.
Cape Cod is quintessential New England layered with a history that’s combined with some of the most beautiful beaches in the U.S. It’s perfect in the summer but less crowded and possibly even more perfect in the fall when the weather is still warm and the crowds have waned. If you want a nostalgic, Americana destination where the living is easy, the views are spectacular, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time a bit — Cape Cod is the place for your next trip. So pack your favourite Travelpro bags and enjoy. And if you go, let us know what you enjoyed most @ www.RMWorldTravel.com/Contact. Until the next time, safe and happy travels… Let’s Go America!
